BI Book Planning performance overhaul

BI Book Planning is Greenstep's budgeting and forecasting tool inside Power BI. I rewrote how its planning grid renders, so a refresh only touches the rows and cells that changed.

  • Moved rendering to D3 enter / update / exit joins with keyed data binding and DOM reconciliation.
  • Benchmarked the optimized branch against a baseline QA branch with Power BI Performance Analyzer exports and the Chrome DevTools profiler.
  • Wrote up the results as a multi-page report across interaction and refresh scenarios.
  • Audited pbiviz.json and capabilities.json against Microsoft AppSource certification requirements.

Senior Developer

Datellers Mar 2024 – Present
  • Built Power BI custom visual components from the ground up with D3.js, TypeScript and the pbiviz SDK, turning client requirements into highly configurable, data-driven visuals. Promoted to Senior Developer on delivery quality.
  • Led an end-to-end D3.js performance initiative on the BI Book Planning visual, replacing full re-renders with keyed data binding and DOM reconciliation to cut unnecessary DOM mutations on large, frequently refreshed datasets.
  • Owned benchmarking of the optimized branch against a baseline QA branch with Power BI Performance Analyzer and the Chrome DevTools profiler, and compiled the findings into a multi-page report.
  • Root-caused a production defect where calculated columns broke when referenced fields were deleted; shipped pre-deletion warnings and automatic clearing of invalid formulas.
  • Audited the packaging workflow (pbiviz.json, capabilities.json) against Microsoft AppSource certification requirements.
  • Mentor a junior developer through structured code reviews on TypeScript and D3.js practice, deadlines and code quality.
